When you’re living with MS, just getting through the day can require a strength most people will never fully understand. And I’m not talking about the power-through-it, hustle-harder kind of strength that the world glorifies. That kind of strength – the kind that thrives on to-do lists, pushing through pain, and ignoring your body’s needs doesn’t work here.
In fact, it can make things worse.
Living with MS requires a different kind of strength. One that’s quieter, deeper, and often unseen. And honestly? It’s braver.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re not doing enough, I made this for you. Because this journey isn’t about doing less – it’s about living better. And that starts with healing habits that work with your body, not against it.
Redefining Strength with MS
Before my diagnosis, I thrived on productivity. I hustled hard, said yes to everything, and prided myself on how much I could accomplish in a day. Maybe that sounds familiar?
But that version of strength—one that’s measured by checkboxes and busyness – doesn’t hold up with MS. After moving into our new home during a massive heat wave, followed by renovations I tried to micromanage down to every label and light fixture, my body crashed. I ended up in the ER three times in December, completely wiped out with migraine and stress.
And even then, I struggled to learn the lesson.
Why? Because hustle runs deep. It’s wired into how we measure our worth.
But MS forced me to unlearn all of that.
You’re Already Stronger Than You Thin
Now, I know what you’re thinking… or fearing. I’ve felt it and feared it, too. That if we slow down, we’re giving up. That if we stop pushing, we’re settling.
But what if doing less isn’t giving up at all?
What if it’s making space for energy, peace, and a life that actually feels good?
That’s what MS has taught me.
It’s forced me to budget my energy on the things that truly matter.
And yes, some days, it’s frustrating and uncomfortable.
But it’s also been one of the greatest gifts – because it’s helped me stop living in burnout and start living with more intention.
What Real Strength Looks Like
Real strength is not squeezing in one more errand or powering through exhaustion.
It’s:
- Saying no when your body needs rest
- Unfollowing accounts that make you feel less than
- Pause and breathe when anxiety creeps in
- Celebrate rest instead of judging it
These small actions don’t always look like strength on the outside but they are. They’re choices that honor your healing. And they matter more than you think.
Why Hustle Doesn’t Work for MS
And while it’s easy to take the “hustle” approach with your healing journey, that doesn’t work either.
Healing doesn’t happen through hustle. It happens through consistency.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life today.
You just need to take one small, supportive step.
Those small, repeatable habits? The ones that seem too simple to make a difference?
They make a difference.
- A glass of water in the morning
- A stretch while you’re watching TV
- Choosing a salad instead of fries
- Taking your supplements today
These are the habits that support your healing without burning you out.
The key? Start small – but start today.
Stop waiting to feel motivated or for life to settle down. That moment may never come. But the healing can start right now with one simple choice.
